Equal Exchange Baristas Visit Tanzania
Former Equal Exchange Café baristas Kara Klinge and Ariel Aaronson-Eves recently visited a coffee farm run by the Kilimanjaro Native Co-operative Union (KNCU), Equal Exchange's producer partner in Tanzania.

KNCU is in the process of opening a café of their own, a project that Kara and Ariel have been involved in during their time in Tanzania. At Kahawa Shamba ("coffee farm" in Swahili), Kara and Ariel got to go through the coffee process from seed-to-cup, picking coffee cherries, running them through the depulper and then helping in further processing the washed and dried beans, removing the husks, roasting the beans over an open fire, grinding them, and then adding boiling water to create a dark, bitter, but fresh brew. In addition to taking part in the coffee processing, they had the opportunity to talk to the farmers, hear their concerns and aspirations, and think about how Fair Trade and Equal Exchange can better serve and bring about positive change in the lives of these small farmers, making this another highlight of their trip. |

61 Beans Coffee-of-the-Month
We're excited to announce that this month's pick from Equal Exchange is an espresso! Espresso 520 is a Light Full City Roast from CEPICAFE in Piura, Peru. This single-origin espresso is ridiculously sweet like brandied chocolate and maraschino cherry, with a thick and honey-like mouthfeel. Try it throughout the month of April! |

A Barista Showdown!
Our head barista and barista trainer, Miranda Moody, was honored to represent Equal Exchange and the Equal Exchange Café at the recent North East Regional Barista Competition. Over the course of the weekend, Miranda met people who were passionate about coffee and also had the opportunity to network. While her training for the competition taught her a great deal, especially the time she spent pulling espresso shots from single-origin coffees and blends, Moody said her time spent among fellow baristas encouraged her to continue learning and honing her skills. Miranda is excited about the prospect of networking with her new barista friends and looks forward to next year's competition. |
Spring Has Sprung (And So Have Our Prices)
Starting April 1, our beverage prices will increase ... but please keep reading! It's not just that we know we serve a mean cup of a legal but highly-addictive substance; this is not a decision we have come to hastily. It is our first price increase and we do not plan on doing it again anytime soon. It is our mission to bring you the highest quality possible and to ensure that people and the earth are treated fairly. That impacts everything we do - from the local milk we serve, to the fairly traded organic coffee and cocoa that goes in our lattes and mochas, to the tea from small farmers that goes into our iced chai, to the compostable cups we use to reduce waste. Alas, our costs have been increasing substantially and at this rate it is not sustainable for us to keep our current pricing. We hope that you will understand and continue to support us. See, we have come to get to know you over the last year and we have grown quite attached ... you complete us! |
