What’s New

From the Equal Exchange Chocolate Team
Due to inconsistencies in quality, Equal Exchange has decided to discontinue the Organic Dark Chocolate with Nibs Chocolate bar once the current stock runs out, which is predicted to be sometime in November. Be sure to get your hands on the bar before it’s too late (the ones in stock are still delicious!), and take this opportunity to try some of our other flavors, such as the Organic Orange Dark Chocolate bar (with citrus notes similar to those in the Nibs bar) or the single-origin Organic Panama Extra Dark Chocolate bar.

Introducing Co-op 108 Skin Care
Equal Exchange Café will soon be carrying skin care products from Co-op 108, an employee-owned co-operative recently started in western Massachusetts. Co-op 108 uses all high-quality and natural ingredients, and local and organic whenever possible, just like us at the Equal Exchange Café! We will be carrying "hand solve" as well as some body oils. For more information on this great company we are happy to support, check out their website.

Are You a Bike Rider? Get a Discount!
Equal Exchange Café is excited to be part of the Bicycle Benefits program to encourage bike commuting and helmet use. To join, buy a $5 sticker at the café, put it on your bike helmet, and then get 10% off your entire order at the café whenever you show us the sticker on your helmet. You’ll also get other great discounts across the Boston area. For more information and a complete list of participating businesses, check out their website.

Soup's Up
The café is now carrying soups and chili from The Local Vegan. All soups are vegetarian and almost all are vegan. We are also offering breadsticks from Iggy's to go with the soups. The soups are available in 8-oz. and 12-oz. bowls, to enjoy at the café or to take-away in compostable containers.

Upcoming Events

Last Chance to Catch the Fair Trade Film Festival
The final installment of October’s Fair Trade Film Festival will be on Thursday, Oct. 29, at 5 p.m. We will be viewing The Price of Sugar, a documentary narrated by Paul Newman about sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic. Hope to see you there!

Watch A Barista Throwdown
On Oct. 24, Equal Exchange Café will be participating in White Chrome, Boston’s first annual Barista Throwdown, hosted by Flat Black Coffee Company. The region’s best baristas representing over six independent cafés will converge in Dorchester to compete in front of a live and online audience of spectators nationally and internationally for the coveted title of Boston’s 2009 White Chrome Barista Champion. In the highly anticipated two-hour, two-round competition at Flat Black Coffee Company in Ashmont Hill, Dorchester, each competitor will prepare espresso, latte/cappuccino art, and original signature drinks to exacting standards in a five-minute performance set to music.

Three local celebrity judges (Annie Copps and Allison Arnett, both esteemed food writers, and Gerra Harrigan, an SCAA-certified judge) will evaluate each performance, including barista knowledge, the taste of beverages served, cleanliness, creativity, technical skill and overall presentation demonstrated by the competitors. One winner will be named Boston’s 2009 White Chrome Barista Champion in an award ceremony immediately following the competition at Tavolo Restaurant. Barista Ariel Aaronson-Eves will represent Equal Exchange Café in an epic battle to honor small farmers everywhere!
