61 Beans Coffee-of-the-Month: October
October's coffee is San Juan del Rio Coco from PRODECOOP in Nicaragua. It's insanely sweet, floral, and juicy, with blood orange and chocolate notes. This is the third year in a row we've offered coffee from San Juan del Rio Coco and much like last year, we've laid hands on a micro-lot from our partners at the Jose Alfredo Zeledon Co-operative. As you may recall, they are located in the heart of SJRC in the small town of Las Vegas. The small town of Las Vegas does not have electricity and although electrical lines will soon make their way to this rural place, the producers are interested in investing in alternative energy, specifically solar panels. They're hoping to eventually have a coffee wet mill that runs completely on solar energy, and is 100% sustainable.
Give it a go; ask us for a sample of this delicious, sweet coffee! |

Do Halloween the Fair Trade Way
Did you know that child slave labor continues to exist in the mainstream cocoa trade? Despite years of promises from the major chocolate manufacturers, too little has been done to tackle forced child labor on many farms that supply their cocoa. At the bottom of the chain, cocoa farmers are left in poverty year after year.
But, there is an alternative! Equal Exchange sources cocoa from small farmer co-ops. The farmers own their land, and run their business democratically. Here are ways you can support their co-ops at Halloween:
- Visit the Café on Halloween — that's Monday, Oct. 31 — and receive one of our Fair Trade Organic Dark Chocolate Minis for free! You can purchase more Minis to hand out to trick or treaters in bulk on the Equal Exchange retail webstore.
- Raise awareness about child slave labor in the cocoa trade in your own community by participating in the Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign. Give out Fair Trade chocolate attached to an informational card. Act fast, the deadline to order Reverse Trick-or-Treating kits is today, Friday, Oct. 14. Order now!

Congo Coffee Project: Support Women in the DR Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) is a war-torn country in Central Africa with a devastated economy and massive sexual violence against women and girls of all ages.
Often these women need medical attention and counseling to deal with their trauma, but many do not have the resources to seek medical assistance or fear possible rejection within their own communities. In addition, there are few hospitals and the situation is exacerbated by the poor economy and high rate of unemployment. But there is hope and it starts with education, support and change.
The Panzi Foundation was established to bring healthcare to women who are survivors of sexual violence in the Congo. This foundation assists the Panzi Hospital in helping thousands of women a year receive the health care they need. Equal Exchange is proud to be partnering with the Panzi Foundation to help support these efforts through the Congo Coffee Project. While the Congo Coffee Project's message focuses on women as mothers, daughters, sisters and farmers, we want to recognize all farming families with a specific emphasis on an income-generating activity: coffee.
The Congo Coffee Project showcases a smooth and balanced blend of East African coffee beans. Sales from this coffee support the Panzi Hospital’s crucial work with Congolese women who are survivors of sexual and violent assaults, while also building East African economies.
1 lb Congo Coffee Project bags are now available in the Café retail area.
